Abolishing Slavery Struggles
Abolishing slavery was a huge struggle for civil rights activists because so many people were against it. People wanted to get rid of slavery because it was and still is inhumane and just plain cruel. African American’s were tortured in every way possible and it wasn’t right and it needed to end. During 1820-1865 slavery was slowly being abolished but there were still slaves being tortured. There were slaves being sold and they were being put to hard labor.
One way abolitionists tried to get rid of slavery was by creating images, objects, and performances that view slavery in the wrong way. The images played a big role in British and American abolitionist movements to make the public realize what was actually happening to theses slaves. The themes of abolitionist imagery included “the cruelty of slaveholding and its degrading effect upon slaveholders and, correspondingly, depiction of the suffering imposed on slaves, especially regarding the breakup of black families through the slave trade.” This movement was successful but it took years for people to start taking action.
There were many people that would argue that ending slavery would make a huge negative impact on the South where they relied on slave labor for their economy. Defenders of slavery also argued that ending slavery would cause unemployment and chaos and argued to follow the status quo. They also argued that slavery has existed throughout history and was the natural state of mankind and the even said that in the Bible, Abraham had slaves. There were many arguments that defenders of slavery had to stop the abolishment of slavery.
Though abolitionists had many struggles to end slavery they were able to succeed. With everyone’s contribution and determination they were able to get through all the rough times and finally abolish slavery in 1865.
